The Sword & Shield (SnS) is lightweight and fast weapon, and the only only weapon that lets a player use items and the [[Slinger|slinger]] without sheathing the weapon, which gives the SnS great utility.

Using items and the Slinger
With the weapon drawn, items can be used by holding R2 and pressing <<S>>
. Alternatively the Slinger can be used by holding L2 to aim and pressing R2 to fire.
Combat Tips
- The SnS attacks are fast, making them capable of dealing [[Elemental or Status damage|damage#elemental]] quickly.
- The SnS's [[Guarding ability|evade-defense#guarding]] is weak and using the Shield to Guard should be reserved as a final resort. Instead, utilize the SnS's high mobility to avoid attacks.
- Shield-oriented attacks can be used to deal [[Blunt damage|damage#blunt]]. Blunt damage can [[Stun|understanding-monster#stun]] and [[Exhaust|understanding-monster#exhaust]] monsters, but be careful because these bash attacks may send other teammates flying.
- By leveraging the SnS's unique ability to use items and the Slinger with the weapon out, players can set traps quicker or toss well-timed Flash Pods to interrupt monsters. Using well-timed items increases the SnS's effectiveness.

Mid-air attacks are done in the air, such as after hopping off a ledge, jumping off a vine, or climbing up a wall and jumping off.
